The work is lots less based on the car if the complete axle is replaced than just a boot.
Normally, the boot and adding more grease is the standard procedure, but I have found that installing a totally overhauled axles will give part of mind for the owner and the mechanic. When they are overhauled, all the bearings, seals, and grease are replaced so nothing should go wrong unless your technician made a mistake or there happens to be a make defect.
Parts are cheaper by replacing just a boot, but most cars I have seen have had more damage than the boot, typically just the cv bearings. This happens from driving the car with the boot torn or open for some time period.
My advice: Change the complete axle. it'll save you time and it is only a $10 $40 difference from a boot and a totally overhauled axle.
