The car has the cell phone choice installed, but I don't have any information on how to get service or use my current cell service.

Unless you have a phone that was current when the car was new, you are going to be out of look, cellular software changed since then.

I took my '02 S600 into a Mercedes dealer and talked to their electrcian guru who had attempted to reconfigure the software to be compliant with '01 and had no luck.

I checked with all the cellular manufacturers that made or make phones that work/worked with MB models. Nothing worked out.
Maybe you may be able to find an older phone that could work on ebay or craigslist. that is most likely going to be your only shot.

many hours of research and footwork trying to achieve the same thing on my '02 S600.

I've heard you may be able to activate through AT&T, but you may want to call the dealer and learn from them.
