I',m about to purchase one and I wanted to know what',s the car like to own. I',ve done a years worth of homework and shopping around and I just wanted if they',re a delight to own or a ache and expensive??? I drive a three litre petrol already, so i',m not that bothered about mpg, i',m more interested in knowing if the model i',m after is a hard and dependable car.

The BMW X5',s lose value more gradually than other off roaders, this is most likely because of its BMW position. The petrol engines are clearly more thirsty than the diesel ones, but then diesels aren't without their faults, as my friends was a diesel and he had failing turbo sensors. Plus as with a lot of 4x4',s the brakes and steering brushes will need changing frequently. Also a common problem with all BMW',s is suspension. I had a three series for a while and everytime I had it serviced it generally needed new suspension balls.

I could guess it could do about 20 mpg and the insurance group could be 20, so its running costs are high. Plus if you live in the UK its 400 road tax for a 4x4. You could expect to have it serviced every 10,000 miles.

Back when the X5 was new it was most likely worth about 57,000, now based on how many miles its done, you may be able to most likely get one for 19,000

Running costs will be high. A 4.4 litre petrol will be lots more thirsty than your current car and it'll be in the highest tax bracket.

Servicing will also be costly.

With a car like that if you must ask about running costs then it',s most likely too costly, unless you',re a car nut who doesn',t mind cancelling the holiday one year because the car has had a big bill.

Book price may be found on websites like Parkers.co.uk, whatcar.com or you may be able to pay for a valuation from Glass',s. It',s going to be around the 17,000 mark but depends on the exact model, the mileage and the condition.
