What's the difference btw having an amplifier and a subwoofer soundwise?
Would I need both or could I just need an amp and some speakers if I want quality sound? Is a subwoofer suggested for a compact car?

subs hit low freq. that speakers can not. just like tweeters hit highs subs can not. if you just want a little bass to give you good lows, get a basic sub, ten or 12". I could look at a polk audio momo series. you can get it for about $100. give at 200 300 watts rms and you will be good

An amp is use to amplify the audio signal to speakers or subs.
Subs were used for one thing, bass. based on if you want just good bass extension or ground shaking bass depends on the enclosure and the amount of power.
I have a Honda Civic with two 200 watt RMS subs in a sealed box. They were used just for bass extension.

you need an amplifier to make the subwoofers work. regular speakers are powered by the hed unit. if you want subs, then it will be good for your car. every car can handle them.

If you want quality sound, truthfully you do not need subwoofers. Subwoofers are only for remote bass and show. For quality sound get you some nice speaker parts and about a 400 watt amp and it'll do the job just good. The difference btw factory and non factory radios can mean a big difference also.

A subwoofer can make a tremendous difference in the sound quality if you are not looking for lots of deep bass. With a subwoofer to manage the low end, you may be able to turn the bass down in the front and rear speakers, or cut the bass out of them completely. This will result in a cleaner in general sound. a small subwoofer will make a difference in a compact car, compact cars frequently have compact speakers.
A good way to upgrade a system without breaking the bank is to purchase a four channel amp, good substitute front speakers, and a single four ohm subwoofer in a small sealed box. Replacing the front speakers will make a big difference in your system's clearness and sharpness, particularly if you run them from two of the amplifier channels. The other two channels may be linked to drive the subwoofer. there is not much advantage to replacing the rear speakers, so just leave them stock.
