Well I like these answers Benz is still in the Euorpean Race and has a long history in racing and is a strong contender. BMW is making lots of motors for other auto makers so I belive that the BMW has Engine Performance But for the 2006 2007 body style hands down is BENZ for its E55AMG A sedan car that is seems a two door at frist.

okey which M5?
the old one has 400 bhp and eight cylinders.
the new one has 500 bhp and ten cylinders
the E 55 has 469 bhp and eight cylinders.
the new E 63 AMG has 506 bhp and eight cylinders.
the Benzes are more of a touring car that has all the power when you need it. the E 63 is the clear choice. and whatever you do avoid BMW's SMG transmission. it's awful..

M5 does zero 60 in 4.5, while the benz does it in 4.4. Both are RWD luxury sedans. Its true that the SMG and iDrive are both awful on the BMW, but then again only old ppl drive mercedes. Car and Driver really had a comparison between the BMW M5, Mercedes e55 AMG and the Audi S6. The BMW was a remote 3rd, while Audi only lacked the mercedes by two points. Personally, I could decide the Audi out of all 3, but between the Benz and the BMW, I could decide the BMW because it seems like an real sports car while the Mercedes still seems a luxury car with a big engine.

The BMW 500 hp v10 m5 will smoke the Benz v8 once and every time, it's just no mach for the BMW, not in the same league, one is a sporty sedan, and the other is a race car disguised in a four door sedan.
Best answer, go to the BMW dealer for a test drive, and brace yourself.. attempt to hide your driver's license because after 100 mph you get a ticket for wreck less driving. you will not believe your eyes, nor your senses... seriously.
good luck.

umm, the benz is more of a luxury car with a big engine. the BMW is more of a race car with four doors so you may be able to take a bunch of people for the ride of their lives. bmw's m series are really race inspired vehicles. the M6 is better. bmw also last longer than anyother car there's. I have an 85' 325i with 498,336 miles on it. never had a timeing chain replaced nor an alternator nor water pump.

The M5 is without a doubt the better of the two. it's light weight and the SMG technology has the fastest shift because it needs no clutch. it's naturally aspirating so it doesn't have any lag and its zero 60 is someplace between 4.5 and 4. I know that the E55 can not beat the M5 in a drag or any other race but it does beat in non performance groups like room, etc. The Bimmer is the way to go.

i think the BMW M5 is the more sporty car and the MB is just a fast luxery car but im with brianaglr the Audi is the way to go and in your price range you may be able to look at the RS6 and RS4 too. between the two choices you gave I could go with the BMW but if I were purchasing I could seriously think about an Audi RS in that price range.

Easy. M5. The performance is better, the ride is better, and the engine is waaaaaaaaaay better. The Benz is supercharged, the BMW is naturally aspirated. Natural aspirated cars are more predictable to drive. The BMW is easier/cheaper to fix. But the biggest thing I can say against the Benz having driven both 2002 M5 V8 and 2002 E55 V8 is that the Benz is constantly adjusting its traction control and stability control. If you really stab the pedal, the Benz feels unstable and unpredictable. The BMW really sticks to the road although. Its pure traction and corner stability. The BMW is just a more 'refined' performance car. The Benz is more 'refined' in that "Hi, I'm a 60 year old and I want everyone to know I spent an load of money on a car I'll never really DRIVE to its possible."

The Mercedes is AUTO . That sums up the sportness of it .
Its a great fast luxury autobahn cruiser, however notice how sports car isn't in that description . Really not etremely comparable cars except for straightline acceleration . The M5 isn't going to ride as soft as the Merc and most likely wont have a lower cabin db at highway speeds, however I believe it'll be more fun and out handle the E55 . Both great cars although . It could be nice to be able to sip a latte while out accelerating a corvette
