More Porsche 998 Speculation

Some time ago, we brought you this generating of a futuristic 998, but as indicated by Wikipedia, the Porsche 998 may be with us by 2009 and could feature a new 3.8 or 4L powerplant.
Even although Porsche has generally said they’d never deviate from a rear engine layout, it’s rumoured that some of the Stuttgart engineers could like to see a mid engined configuration.
The body of the 998 may be constructed using aluminium, and as indicated by the speculation, the next GT2 and GT3 models could be wearing optional carbon fibre wheels.
It sounds like a big jump in development for a car that’s evolved so slowly over the past forty years, and may be 100 % speculation, but it still makes for an interesting read.
Time will tell what’s fact and what’s fiction.

When will the 911 undergo a new model year? My best guess is next year. A redesign of the current model is a different question completely. Go get "peeved" you weenie sneeze.

Let's 1st look at Porsche's recent release schedule which about comes down to one car or big upgrade yearly some coming out a little earlier, but about :
1997 986 Boxster
1998 996 Carrera
1999 996 GT3
2000 996 Turbo
2001 996 GT2
2002 996 Carrera updated style, more power
2003 996 GT3 updated
2004 997 Carrera
2005 987 Boxster/Cayman
2006 997 Turbo
2007 997 GT3
2008 997 GT2
Looking at that and last history, you may be able to most probably expect 2009 will bring some minor style changes to the 997 with a bump in power and a little re engineering of parts depending on what they have learned since producing other 997 models. The introduction of Porsche's forthcoming four door model will follow that, and then: 2011 or 2012 will probably be the year that the 998 will make it is look.
All of which is specualtion although, and comes back to the fact that there will generally be something new coming out at some point. If you like the car, a new model coming out really should not change that.

The 911 maintained the same basic silhouette for well over forty years, do not expect a big change any time soon. it's a great Porsche tradition to make uninterrupted small enhancements on a proven design platform rather than dramatic changes all now.
German auto manufacturers do not save design changes for the model year change every year, production changes are made as design advances are made. There have been many big design changes in the center of what Americans could think about a model year run.
