the car runs out or gear at 140mph redline 6,000rpm. which I can hit at half throttle. Rather than use up 2grand on a gear vender overdrive unit or have someone build a custom tranny it could be eaiser to change the ring and pinion. Besides 1st gear is too short anyway.

If you are redlining at what you say is half throttle, you are already stressing the motor. While you may be able to alter the gearing for top speed, you're also changing the torque curve, which could really hamper mid range performance, which is where you typically use up most of your time unless you are racing on big ovals or salt flats.
