The fuel filter is on the inner frame rail under your truck. you will need a couple of open end wrenches, and if you like to keep the fuel mess to a minimum, change it while the tank is low on fuel and before proceeding, go to the fuel rail on the intake manifold where the fuel injectors are With the engine cold and the key off, take the cap off the schrader valve seems a big tire valve and depress the valve stem to release the fuel pressure 1st. Watch your eyes, it comes out fast. Then go to the filter and remove and replace it. there's generally an arrow on the filter showing the path of the fuel as it should go through the filter. arrow points towards front of truck. I like to take the old filter and clean off the outlet side of the opening and hold the filter over a can, I then softly blow through the filter backwards to its normal flow to check for dirty contagion AND restriction. Gives a good indication of the fuel tank health.

good luck, and do not smoke :

That fuel filter is in the tank and gets changed when pump fails.

Trucks 2003 and up the filter is in the tank and is only supposed to be changed if the fuel pump is to be replaced.Which if you ask me is rediculous because its still a filter and can still get clogged.A lot of manufactures still are not over there game when it comes to filter service. They recommend fuel filter changes at intervals that are rediculous. These long intervals can clogg the filter and because the engine to run lean and also premature fuel pump failing to name a couple.

The fuel filter is on the left inside of the frame rail roughly straight down from where the cab ends. The other thing is called a strainer and is inside the tank on the bottom of the fuel sender unit and doesn't have to be replaced unless you have a problem with it being plugged which you should not. I used to replace these when I had the tank off although as I have seen them plug, but only a couple of times.
