I like to do an oil change and before I get myself stuck under the car, I thought, maybe some one can point me to the right spot to look for. I do not want to purchase a fix book, just for that.
Appreciate an answer, thanks.

DIY information for an e46 325i. Should be the same for your engine.

The 1st thing you notice looking underneath the car is that plastic shields cover almost the complete bottom. Conspicuously, there's a big exposed screw right where you think the center of the engine is. IT isn't THE DRAIN screw.

BMW, in its infinite wisdom, made this screw 17mm in size, same as the drain screw. if you’re looking for something that fits a 17mm socket in search of a drain screw, this is it. but, don’t remove it.

There is a trap door just behind the screw. Eureka.

It isn't easy to do oil change in these cars. Get yourself a Bentley service manual for the car and study.

Your oil pan is made out of aluminum. If you do not apply right amount of torque, you'll strip the drain hole thread. And you do not want to know how much that's going to cost you to fix.

Once oil is drained, then you must deal with oil filter. Which isn't on the rear of the engine block like most cars. easy to change, but is different.

Then you'll have to reset the service light. Which requires costly Peake tool.

The oil drain plug is on the oil pan, it's the lowest part of the motor behind the subframe that holds the engine up. there's also a screw on the side of the block, this is the coolant drain plug. If you go under the car you'll see the oil pan, it'll not be protected by anything and there's a 17mm screw on the passenger side. The oil filter is on the top of the engine in a round container there's a long 13mm screw that holds the cap on. be sure to change all of the seals and washers that come with a new filter.
