I have seen this happen with some newer vehicles.
1. fuse
2. unplugged wire holder thing.. from the fuse box
3. electrical problems
4. Our fuel pump went out and it shorted the whole gauge panel.

You can get a pretty cheap diagnostic at checker, or most autoparts stores.

Diamler Chrysler has a TSB Technical Service Bulletin for the problem your having. The air bag light may also be illuminating when the cluster is inoperative? Just go to a Jeep dealer and ask for a instument cluster wiring harness the harness for the TSB . you will have to cut off your old harness and I do not think it is an costly part. Good luck.

I had problems with the gauges on my 99 GC Sport. It was the clock spring. The odometer thing did not happen, although.
