The original intention was to tell emergency services that in case of an accident there had been a child or baby in the car AT THE TIME OF THE ACCIDENT and if there is not one in the wreckage they should look outside because the said child/baby was thrown out of the car on affect.
Then the idiots got hold of the idea and it soon became the norm for each sad Tom Dick or Harry to have one of the signs in the car on the grounds that other drivers could take extra care.

I haven't idea such a silly thing to do. It suggests that we all drive around like maniacs unless we see a "baby on board" sticker when we all have to slow down. I just do not get it. it is nearly as bad as "my other car is a porsche" sticker.

The serious answer is, if the car is involved in a big accident, the emergency services will may find the sign, so they'll search for a baby in the wreckage.

However, this does not account for those who display the signs, but don’t have child in the car.

i know it's stupid, but the idea is so you don't drive too close, but if you're already close enough to read it its not doing the job, though my boyfriend has said that if he sees these signs then he does back off a bit, so possibly not so stupid after all

Well, bless their little innocent hearts, they think that their little sign will keep all the tailgaters away from the rear bumper, and that is it is a real safety measure.

Because people drive like idiots. Plus, road rage became an epidemic. You just kind of hope that some of those hotheads will resist the urge to run you off the road because you're really doing the speed bound if they know that a three month old is in the car.

Silly idea because a baby isn't generally in the car also misleading in the case of an accident,valuable time is on occasion wasted when emergency services need a none present baby at the scene of an accident,35 yrs paramedic.

In hopes that other drivers will drive more cautiously around them knowing that there's a baby in the car. I think it's a smart idea, anybody with a heart will back off and drive a little slower around them knowing that they have a child in the car. I also like the idea that colonel custard had, it informs paramedics and police and such that there was a child in the car that just got hit so to look for this child before attending the adults.
Of course, FRANK M has a great point as well, if there's no baby in the car precious life saving time is wasted on looking for a non existant baby. Maybe those who have these signs should take them down when they leave baby at home.

I have had them in my car when my kids where babies as you may also get the child ones and so on.

The idea for me was tell other drivers that I don't want to race them as I have the kids in the car but this didn't work and they still drove up my bumper trying to anger me to play along.The annoyance that on occasion comes with have a sporty car.

But it does make me mad like some days ago I doed the speed bound.And I had an mpv up my bumper.Which after it learned it wasnt going to push me along,overtook me and floored it doing what must have been over 100mph just enough but there where about six kids in the car and someplace young and in his back window two baby on board signs.
So this approach with the signs up spoils it for the people whom use them for what is supposed to be a good reason.

If the car is involved in an accident and all the passengers are thrown out, it lets the police, fire and ambulance persons know there's a baby to be rescued.
