Why does my car sound like a truck?

My car looks to be running too high

in idle it sounds like a cross between a truck

and a diesel engine, doesn't do it all the

time, it's intermittent

The idle problem sounds like your choke isn',t working properly. if you have an injected or carburated car. The choke assembly runs your engine at about 1.5 times normal idle to help the engine warm up. Most older cars have an assembly on the exhaust manifold to draw warm air into the intake to help heat the engine up. Your choke can either be thermolytic or electrical in operation. Meaning either it shuts off automatically when it gets warm enough, or it shuts off when an electrical switch heats up to operating temp.

The sound issue may be some things. With the description you gave, it sounds like a valvetrain issue. Either you have a limp hydraulic lifter, a flattened cam not as probably or if you have an engine with hard lifters, then you have to have your valves adjusted.

It may be that your gas pedal gets stuck and idles a bit more then common. Or the sound may be you have a little hole in your muffler
