Will a th400 shift from first to 2nd when the shifter is in

Will a th400 shift from first to 2nd when the shifter is in 1st?
I plan to put a th400 in my drag car and have been told that it'll shift from first to 2nd on own when you have it in low and wondered if anybody knew for sure and if if there's a way to prevent it?

They have an override on most of them, that will shift the trans to second at a pre set rpm.. Most was up around six to 7K rpm although.

I could do one of the two..

You changer weights/springs out to get it to auto shift where you want it do.. Then you just leave trans in D and it'll shift one 2, and two three at the rpm you re cal it to.

I have my th 400 in my camaro set to set at 6400 rpm.. I place shifter in D. Launch the car and it starts off in first gear, then auto shifts to second gear at 6400 rpm, then again going to third gear at 6400 rpm..

For a drag only car, get a manual valve body. it'll not shift any gears automatically, but will shift instantly when you manually choose the gear you want.

I do not recall ever having a TH400 shift from 1st to second when the shifter was in 1st, but I am not an expert on Chevy tranny's.

This may not apply, but in my tbird I have first, drive, overdrive. If I start out in 1st it'll hold 1st.shift it to drive and it'll shift to second.while in second, put it back into 1st and it'll hold second instead of changing it back into first.then shift to drive and so on..

if you shift an auto tranny into first or low1 it'll not shift out that gear. you'll end up red lining your motor. your best bet on the strip could be a manual trans
