I live in the UK, where cars weren't obliged to implement obd2 till around 2000. The US was obliged to implement obd2 in 1996 I think. My connector is under the bonnet hood

Let me re phrase that then. Was OBD2 and extension/enhancement of OBD1, such that features were added. Or, was it a complete new specification? it is a simple question I think. Doh does not help. Leaving it to the mechanics in this neck of the woods really DOES require more money than brains.

The round connector under the hood on BMW cars in the US isn't for OBD. All OBD connectors are in the car. If you're trying to hook up a diagnostic tool that does the whole car that is the round plug under the bonnet hood here in the us . OBD only does emission related, while the round diagnostic port did everything. OBD2 plugs aren't round they're trapezoid so you may be able to only hook it up one way.

98 is obd2 compliant. Your car has at least world obd2 communication, you just have to find the datalink. If you give me more specifics I can look it up for you is it a 3series etc.
sounds like you need a scantool with european potential in that case, you may be able to attempt baum diagnostics and there are some number of others with those potential
