Would it save gas to drive my subaru in FWD?

Postby Fastride » Tue Nov 03, 2009 1:43 am

I do lots of commuting and since the weather is still nice, I wondered if driving my Subaru in FWD could save me a bit more gas thanks. Can you have some evidence or be a technician to answer this question? Since logically it could save gas.

my 04 subaru forester doesn',t have an choice to have it in FWD. it's AWD, all the time. I think all subarus are like this.

However, the auto transmission on most subarus gives 90 of the power to the front and ten to the back and adapts as needed based on road conditions. Subaru has a sophisticated all wheel drive system.

I had to run my Legacy with two diff types of tires for a two months till I could pay for a new set of tires, so I put the FWD fuse in and drove it in FWD throughout that time. Never noticed any difference in gas mileage.and the handeling was awful. FWD does no damage, but keep it AWD. Report Abuse

They are already economical. with AWD it averages the same as Honda Accord or Camry. Don',t trust the claims how agreements do 35mpg. Its more like 28 to 30, which is what you may be able to get with Subaru Legacy AWD with more hp. My brother owns four cylinder fwd Accord, 2001, and it averages 2629mpg on highway and around 22 in the city, which is the same as what I get out of six cylinder Outback, AWD. Subaru isn',t intended to be driven in FWD. you'll damage the differential. If you got the FWD fuse, that's only intended in case you have flat tire, and have to drive it on the spare tire. don't DRIVE IT IN FWD.

It should in hypothesis. Let',s just say it does. How much are going to save? If it gets a couple more miles per gallon, are you really going to save so much it'll make a big difference at the end of the month? I doubt it. The car was intended to be full time AWD so I think the risk of changing that's greater than the rewards. I mean if something breaks, then what?

Yes. I have had some number of Subarus over the years. generally use FWD unless you need the extra traction.
