The 2.75-mile stretch at Jerez is the ground for winter trials in Formula One. This is when drivers acclimate to their new vehicles and engineers iron out any issues. It’s a time when fans catch their initial look at the new gear. Also, it offers analysts ample material as they decipher the potential season frontrunners.
These tests carry significant weight, given that the sport’s regulating body, the FIA, permits teams just over 9,300 miles of testing annually. This aims to minimize costs and maintain fairness. It curtails teams with ample resources (McLaren, Ferrari, Mercedes) from overshadowing those with tighter budgets (Sauber) before the season commences.
There are only four three-day test slots available for teams between now and March 5. Up to now, there have been few surprises. Ferrari, Mercedes, and Red Bull showcased their strength, while McLaren had a tough time with its new Honda engine. Williams shone, Lotus didn’t show up on Day One, and Force India has chosen to skip the first round of tests. This has sparked questions about their readiness for the season kick-off in Melbourne on March 15.
Sebastian Vettel is reportedly pleased with his Ferrari. Sauber’s newbie Felipe Nasr clocked the second-fastest lap on Monday. Williams’ strong performance was reiterated by Valterri Bottas. Reigning champ Lewis Hamilton and runner-up Nico Rosberg continued to clock miles in their Mercedes. Jenson Button stayed hopeful despite McLaren completing only 17 laps over two days.
This marks the second year of F1 using hybrid drivetrains. In F1 terms, these are “power units” that utilize a 1.6-liter turbocharged V6 and two energy recovery systems. These systems draw power from exhaust pressure and braking. The aerodynamic regulations are basically the same as in 2014, though some tweaks have made the noses slightly more aesthetic.
