Mercedes-Benz showcased its daring “F 015 Luxury in Motion” concept at CES, hinting at a future where drivers might not be necessary.
This concept car visualizes an autonomous future with soap-bar-like exterior and an interior that looks like stylish, modern meeting rooms. Two things are clear though. Firstly, it’s just a concept, far from being ready for production. We may have to wait about 20 years for this to become reality. Although self-driving cars are on the horizon, many issues need to be addressed. These range from technical challenges to safety and regulation concerns. Not to mention convincing consumers to let go of the steering wheel. All these will require years of work, especially as both government and auto industry aren’t known for their speed.
Secondly, the design of this car might not appeal to everyone. This comes as a surprise given that Mercedes-Benz usually produces beautifully designed cars. It’s hard to align this soap-like design with the creators of the 300 SL Gullwing or the SL 500.
Nonetheless, this concept is important as it reflects Mercedes’ forward-thinking approach. It looks beyond the present, to a time when autonomous vehicles could change our approach to car design. When computers prove to be better drivers, elements like forward-facing seats, mirrors, and pedals could become redundant. This change will open doors to creative and ground-breaking designs. Google’s innovative (though somewhat odd) autonomous prototype showcased in May and Rinspeed’s robotic EV concept Budii from last month underline this trend.
